Detailed Syllabus for SSC CHSL Tier I 2017 - Based on Latest Exam Pattern


SSC CHSL 2017 Recruitment notification was released recently. The online registration has started from 18th November & will continue till 18th December 2017. All of you must have started your preparation in order to reserve one seat for yourself among 3259 vacancies. Since the SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level Tier I exam is scheduled on 4th March 2018 to 26th March 2018. Therefore, you have sufficient time to prepare for the exam & practice lots of SSC CHSL Tier I Mock Test. In order to ensure that you cover all the topics of the syllabus for SSC CHSL exam, here is the detailed Syllabus for SSC CHSL Tier I Exam 2017.

The detailed syllabus  is given below for each subject, separately. These subjects are further divided into topics, sub-topics, weightages, etc. to give you a clear picture of everything that you need to cover while preparing yourself.



SSC CHSL Tier I Syllabus 2017-18

The SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level exam will consist of four subjects as below:
·       General Intelligence
·       English Language
·       Quantitative Aptitude
·       General Awareness

Syllabus for SSC CHSL General Intelligence

The General Intelligence subject is known as a reasoning section. The topics that you will be asked are:


#1. Analogy
         Types: Semantic (GK and Meaning based), Symbolic (Letters based), Number (Numerical), Figure (Plane Figures).
         Weightage: 4-6 Qs
         Level: Easy, Not Time Consuming, Direct Questions, These questions will test your Genaral Knowledge (Semantic), Logics (Symbolic, Number) and Visual Imagination (Figures)

#2. Blood Relation
         Question Types: General blood relation problem, Family Tree.
         Weightage: 1 Qs
         Level: Easy & less time taking. More accuracy is possible.

#3. Classification:
         Types: Semantic (GK and Meaning), Symbolic (Letters based), Number based.
         Weightage: 4-5 Qs
         Level: Same as Analogy

#4. Series:
         Types: Semantic, Number, Figure based, Alphabets based.
         Weightage: 4-5 Qs
         Level: Tricky, Maybe Time Consuming, Questions will test the Clarity of your Thought Process

#5. Venn Diagrams
         Types: Logical Venn Diagrams, Venn Diagram based Problems and Syllogisms
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Level: Easy to Moderate, Logical Venn Diagrams can be tricky.

#6. Symbolic Operations: Coding and decoding
         Types: Analogy based, Letter Shifting, Coding Letters of a Word
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Level: Moderate, Moderate to Highly Time Consuming, Moderate Accuracy possible.

#7. Problem Solving
         Types: Ordering and Ranking, Circular and Linear Puzzles, Logical and Mathematical Puzzles, Clock & Calendar problems.
         Weightage: 2-4 Qs
         Level: Logical Puzzles can be tricky, Easy to Moderate

#8. Alphabet & Word Test
         Types: Logical Sequence, Meaningful sequence, Word Formation, Matrix.
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Level: Moderate to High Accuracy Possible, Time Consuming, Easy in Difficulty

#9. Missing Numbers
         Types: Missing number in Matrix and Diagram
         Weightage: 1 Qs
         Level: Moderate to Tough, Moderate to High Accuracy Possible

#10. Non-Verbal Reasoning
         Types: Paper folding & cutting, Embedded figures, Mirror Image, Water Image, Cubes and Dices, Pattern Completion, Counting Figures.
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Level: Moderate, High Accuracy Possible, Visual Imagination Required, Elimination of Options Required

#11. Verbal Reasoning
         Types: Drawing Inference & conclusions, Statement & Assumptions, Statement & Arguments, Course of Action.
         Weightage: 1 Qs
         Level: Easy to Moderate, Moderately Time Consuming

#12. Direction & Distance
         Question Types: Route & network based
         Weightage: 1-2Qs
         Level: Easy, Direct Questions, Less Time Consuming

Syllabus for SSC CHSL English Language

Syllabus for SSC CHSL English language can be broadly divided into these major parts:

#1. Cloze Test
         Weightage: 5 Qs
         Easy to Moderate Difficulty, Quick Solve based on Contextual usage, Moderate Accuracy possible.
         Question Types: Single passage containing 5 blanks.

#2. Synonym & Antonyms
         Weightage: 4 Qs
         Moderate Difficulty, Quick Solve based on Contextual usage, High Accuracy possible.
         Question Types: Find the word similar or opposite in the meaning of the given word.

#3. Spellings
Weightage: 2 Qs
Easy to Moderate Difficulty, Quick Solve based on Contextual usage, Moderate to High Accuracy possible.
Question Types: Find the correct spelt word.

#4. Phrase Idiom Meaning & One-word Substitution
         Weightage: 2-3 Qs
         Easy to Moderate Difficulty, Quick Solve based on Contextual usage, Moderate to High Accuracy possible.
         Question Types: Find the correct meaning of the Idiom, Give the one word for the sentence.

#5. Reading Comprehension
         Weightage: 0-7 Qs
         Moderately Time Consuming, Moderate Accuracy Possible.
         Question Types: The passage will focus on topics like moral stories, humanities (medicine, psychology, arts, human behaviour, etc.), social issues economy, business, etc.

#6. Active Passive Voice
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Easy to moderate, Tricky questions, High Accuracy Possible
         Question Types: Converting of voice and speech

#7. Direct Indirect Speech
         Weightage: 1 Qs
         Easy to Moderate, Medium to High Accuracy Possible
         Question Types: Converting of Direct and indirect speech.

#8. Para Jumble / Sentence Jumble
         Weightage: 2-3 Qs
         Level: Easy, Low to Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy possible.
         Question Types: Para Jumbles and/or sentence jumbles.

 #9. Error Spotting, Phrase Replacement, Fill in the Blanks
         Weightage: 7-8 Qs
         Question Types: Error Spotting, Phrase Replacement/ Sentence Correction, Fill in the Blanks.
         Level: Easy to Moderate in Difficulty, Less to Moderately Time Consuming, Moderate Accuracy Possible.
         Topics Covered: Tenses, Articles, Prepositions, Subject Verb Agreement, Parallelism, Degrees of Comparison, Sentence Construction, Phrasal Verbs, Pronouns, Adverbs, Non-Finite Verbs, Common Errors etc.

Syllabus for SSC CHSL Quantitative Aptitude

The complete syllabus for SSC CHSL Numerical Aptitude/Quantitative Aptitude section:

#1. Data Interpretation
         Weightage: 4-5 Qs
         Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible
         Question Types: Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart.

#2. Algebra
         Weightage: 3-4 Qs
         Scoring, Easy if Concepts Clear and Steps Followed, Could be Tricky, Time Consuming.
         Question Types: Basic Algebraic Identities, Polynomials, Elementary Surds, Quadratic Equations, Linear Equations in One and Two or more Variables.

#3. Geometry
         Weightage: 2-3 Questions
         Easy to Difficult, Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
         Question Types: Familiarity with elementary geometric figures and facts, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.

#4. Mensuration
         Weightage: 2-4 Qs
         Easy to Moderate in Difficulty, Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
         Question Types: Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square Base.

#5. Trigonometry
         Weightage: 2-3 Questions
         Easy to Moderate in Difficulty, Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
         Question Types: Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Complementary angles, Height and distances (simple problems only) Standard Identities like sin20 + Cos20=1 etc.

#6. Profit and Loss
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Question Types: Profit and Loss, Successive Selling type questions, Partnerships, Discount & MP.
         Difficulty Level: Scoring, Easy if Proper Steps Followed, Moderately Time Consuming.

#7. Ratio and Proportion
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate , Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible
         Question Types: Simple Ratios, Mean Proportional, Componendo or Dividendo, Direct or Indirect Proportion.

#8. Simplification & Approximation
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Difficulty Level: Easy, Less time consuming
         Question Types: Based on BODMAS, Approximate Values, Percentage, Fractions etc.

#9. Interest
         Weightage: 1 Qs
         Difficulty Level: Scoring, Easy if Formulas & Proper Steps Followed, Moderately Time Consuming.
         Question Types: Simple Interest, Compound Interest, Mixed Interest, Installments.

#10. Speed, Time and distance
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Difficulty Level: Moderate, Moderately Time Consuming
         Question Types: Relative Speed, Average Speed, Problems on Train, Boat & Stream.

#11. Time and Work
         Weightage: 1-2 Qs
         Difficulty Level: Moderate, Moderately Time Consuming
         Question Types: Work Efficiency, Work & Wages, Pipes & Cisterns etc.

#12. Percentages
Weightage: 1 Qs
Easy to Solve, Less Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
Question Types: Calculation-oriented basic percentage.

#13. Number System
Weightage: 0-1 Qs
Difficulty Level: Could be tricky, Moderately time Consuming
Question Types: Divisibility & Remainder, Multiples & Factors, Integers, LCM & HCF.

#14. Averages
         Weightage: 1 Qs
         Easy to Solve, Less Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
         Question Types: Average Weight/Height/Age/Marks, Average Money Expenditure, Average Temperature etc.

Syllabus for SSC CHSL General Awareness

The questions in SSC CHSL exam will test your general awareness of the environment around you and its application in the society. The questions will also test your knowledge of current events and matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect. The syllabus for SSC CHSL exam, also includes questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Awareness and scientific research.
